Defense Department Investigation Finds Hegseth Placed Troops in Danger with Signal Conversation.

A highly anticipated Pentagon review has determined that Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth violated official protocols by disclosing secret information in a Signal messaging chat, as stated by a source familiar with the report.

Particulars of the Event

The online conversation in dispute included details about a scheduled air attack in Yemen against Houthi militants. This discussion came to light after a reporter for the Atlantic was added as a participant.

Other individuals in the group allegedly included Senator JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and former security advisor Mike Waltz. The report did not examine the actions of Hegseth, as the other participants do not work at the Department of Defense.

Signal is a commercially offered messaging app that was not authorized for handling sensitive material.

Potential Threat to Troops

The inspector general's report found that the information shared by Hegseth was secret and could have endangered the safety of US service members if it had been obtained by a hostile nation.

However, the report also noted that Hegseth had the ability to declassify the material he distributed, though it was unclear whether he formally did so.

Hegseth's Response

The informed individual indicated that Hegseth declined an interview by the inspector general. Instead, he submitted a brief written statement.

In his statement, Hegseth asserted he only shared details that would not have risked lives or jeopardized the mission. He added that he had the right to downgrade information and considered the investigation to be politically motivated.

Future Actions

The completed report has been provided to Congress. An unclassified version is expected to be made public in the coming days.
