EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted figures that were central to campaigns to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.
