A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's major government projects.
The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” stated the national leader.
The president announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the former leader, whose time in office ended the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his administration's economic goals for the southern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The building of both railway systems was managed by the nation's military, marking a dramatic growth of its responsibilities in public works. They were executed at an rapid speed, defying expectations to be partially opened before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled ongoing questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an earlier crash this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a key rival party demanded an immediate halt in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This pause was requested until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "requires swift accountability."
In reply, the president insisted that the train had been functioning in full compliance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and management of these vital undertakings.
