New research reveals that individuals who come off new slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a major health publication points out that while overweight people often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Individuals using such treatments must be informed of the potential of rapid weight regain when the medication concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery implies a reversion to original mass within about a year and a half.
Comparing Approaches
The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with other pills.
Researchers note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically see a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Understanding the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the injections explains the accelerated rebound.
These medications copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Stopping of this medication results in hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."
A Chronic Disease?
Medical guidelines recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Accounts
People who have stopped the medication describe a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you become extremely hungry," recalled one woman.
This difficulty is worsened if patients have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Growing Interest
Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.
- Use is greater among women compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing behavioural changes.
