The Former President's Woke Warning Overlooks Europe's Real Threat: Technological Decline.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a misguided assessment of Europe. It claims that open-border policies and so-called "woke" policies pose an grave risk to European civilization. Yet, this perspective rests on a fundamental misreading of the reality. The actual danger facing the EU is not societal but technological and economic lag.

A Glaring Growth Gap Separating Europe and the US

Statistics paint a stark picture. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by eighty-seven percent, while a mere 13.5% growth for the EU. Over this period, EU GDP per capita fell from 76.5% to just half of the American figure. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now has a higher per capita income than several leading EU nations like Italy and France.

Today, roughly half of the world’s top fifty technology firms are American, while a mere four are European.

The Innovation Deficit: The Core Question

This widening disparity is driven by stronger productivity growth in the United States, fueled by technological innovation and better use of resources. The scene of world technology dominance is overwhelmingly US-centric. In the last fifty years, hundreds of American startups have grown into enterprises valued at over $10bn, versus only fourteen in the European continent.

This gap raises a vital issue: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, what is Europe stand? Most analysts concede it is largely a two-horse race between the US and China, with European nations starting at a clear disadvantage.

Root Causes of Europe's Technological Lag

A number of key factors explain this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a far deeper and agile network for funding startups. Europe still lacks a true unified investment market, a factor that limits the scale of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided regulation hamper Europe. A American entrepreneur can launch a service under a single set of laws to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a bigger population size, is split among 27 different national regimes, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was historically viewed with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's long-term lack of spending in defense has eroded its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these challenges, one can find causes for optimism. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have begun to advance serious reform. Notable analyses on European competitiveness and the single market point to the necessity of sweeping reforms.

Given appropriate incentives and rule changes, Europe's strengths might enable far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent retains significant advantages: skilled workforce, excellent schools and universities, and world-class labs. Coupled with a large internal market and high savings rates, these foundations could trigger a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if the EU does not take the lead in developing cutting-edge technologies, it can still dramatically increase economic output by adopting and adapting innovations from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

Europe now faces a critical moment. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, Europe's slide in innovation has been steady. However, if it fails to take decisive action to address its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could give way to a sudden and irreversible loss of world influence.
